Not only are Kia and Nissan the class leaders, Sportage is No2 and Qashqai is No3 in the overall sales charts behind the little Ford Puma.

Any guesses who makes Britain’s third favourite SUV?

It’s not Ford.

It’s not Hyundai.

It’s nothing German.

It’s MG, with the HS, and they’ve just made it even better.

Classier outside, lush and roomy inside, powered by a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.

Even better, MG has kept the second-gen HS a smidge under £25k, still less than a Puma.

Think about that. You could fit a Puma in the back of this.

Room for the kiddlywinks

Compared to its real rival, the similar-sized Ford Kuga, HS is almost £10k cheaper.

You don’t need me to tell you what astonishing value that is.

Even the HS plug-in hybrid at £31k costs less than a plain petrol Kuga and it’ll do up to 75 miles in EV mode.

So you could do the school run and get to work without waking the petrol engine. Properly cheap motoring.

As you can see from the pictures, the cabin is lovely.

Comfy seats. Good visibility. Big squishy armrests. Chunky foot rest. Twin HD screens carrying lots of technology.

Cameras show the ground UNDERNEATH the car to help avoid rocks and things.

There’s plenty of room for the kiddlywinks in the back and a bigger boot. Up 44 litres to 507 litres to match a Qashqai.

You’re not being short-changed in any area whatsoever.

We tried the six-speed manual but you can pay a bit extra for a seven-speed auto if that suits you better.

Out on the road, HS is a comfortable ride even on poor surfaces, without being too wallowy in corners.

Grumbles? I do have two.

The first is that HS is front wheel-drive only. People living out in the sticks might want the added assurance of 4WD, especially in winter.

The second one is an easy fix. The rear-view mirror feels cheap and flimsy. Everything you touch should have a certain weight and quality to it and this doesn’t. It lets the rest of the cabin down.

It’s not a deal-breaker, though.

The HS is right up there as a competent, capacious family car and is incredible value from £270 a month on finance.
