PORSCHE’S ‘most iconic’ model is going hybrid for the first time – and the German manufacturer has a winning formula.

The industry giant announced their legendary 911 will be undergoing a major model makeover this summer.

The hybrid, expected to hit the market by the end of 2024, will be called 992.2 and is one of four new vehicles – the new Panamera, Taycan and electric Macan.

It will have a four-wheel drive and blends the iconic six-cylinder engine with an electric motor in the front axle assembly, meaning it will power the front wheels only.

The 400V system stores its power in a lightweight lithium ion battery and has been created with rapid charge in mind.

Insiders have claimed the 911 next-generation in 2027 will have a 3.6litre version of the six cylinder engine.

A fully electric 911 has not yet been put on the table, but rather a focus on going that direction with their coupé and cabriolet.

Porsche is also due to roll out an 800bhp-plus hybrid version of the GT2 RS.

Fresh changes

Enhanced cooling

There will be new front bumper air ducts that boast five vertical louvres in place of the existing three horizontal louvres.

They are said to provide a better balance of cooling and aerodynamic drag.

There is also a larger central air duct with more cooling channels on either side.

Revised headlamps

The indicators will now be integrated into revised headlight assemblies that feature a new graphic design.

The new headlights are expected to have the capability of lighting the road ahead for up to 600 metres.

Restyled rear end

There will be new brake lights, fitted into a freshly designed rear bumper.

Interior upgrades

There will be some more subtle changes the the inside of the new car.

It appears most of the changes will be technology upgrades rather than visual changes to the design.

There could be new digital instrument graphics and the latest Porsche Communication Management system.

It comes as a much-loved car, first released to the public in the 1990s, has been revived as a hybrid vehicle.

Vauxhall, the UK’s oldest surviving car brand, has revolutionised its classic Corsa for the modern era.

Plus, an iconic motor which was shelved over twenty years ago has also been transformed into a hybrid.

Japanese automaker Honda has brought back the once-popular Prelude after it was axed in 2001.

And, Renault has now revealed the name of its brand-new ‘fuel saving’ hybrid which will compete with the best selling Nissan.

The Symbioz is the car giant’s new SUV and will feature petrol and hybrid model versions.
